Daisychains ABC Crewel Work Pattern Sampler by Alicia Paulson
Last month Alicia Paulson over at Posie Rosy Little Things launched the Daisychains ABC Crewel Work Pattern Kit, which sold out like hot cakes, but luckily she now has the pattern for the very same sampler in her shop, so we can still recreate it, hooray! I've already treated myself to the pattern and it's not often you see quite that much instructional detail in a pattern .pdf, so I can't wait to get stitching and try some new stitches.
I can thoroughly recommend checking out all the Posie Rosy Little Things site, as there are lots of other gorgeous patterns including some free ones!

ReplyDeleteBex - as far as I know there isn't really that much difference between crewel and normal embroidery. The major difference is that crewel uses a thicker thread but I don't think it matters with this pattern and I for one will be stitching this with normal embroidery floss, as I find it difficult to get crewel wool where I love in the UK.

ReplyDeleteTraditionally, crewelwork was wool thread on linen fabric. In my experience, it also tends to have a slightly abstract feel rather than the more naturalistic approach embroidery sometimes takes (for example, freestyle embroidery of a rose will often use long and short stitch in lots of colors to closely approximate the shading of real petals, where as a crewel rose might have one petal in chain stitch, another in laidwork with a plaid affect, another filled with seed stitches or french knots, etc.). For that reason, it also seems to me that crewelwork tends to use more varied stitches. But maybe I'm making that all up.
