I guess it's kind of reverse collage isn't it?
I've made a copy of the page I wanted to use, traced the original dress, stitched it up & then cut away the dress from the magazine page to "frame" the embroidered piece.
I think that this idea would look wonderful if you used pattern envelopes or pages from vintage picture books.
Edit: Of course there are no new ideas. It seems that Doe C Doe has done it all before & really beautifully too. Just take a look here.

ReplyDeleteThe result is cute but I wish everyone would consider to PLEASE make COPIES of the vintage pattern envelope or page from the magazine and use that, instead of ruining the original. People still use and collect those things! :(

I did actually do that. I would NEVER cut up an original but now that I read the post again it does sound like I'm very keen to hack into the lovely 1940's magazine. I promise it's in as new condition. :)
There is actually a woman that made some of these embrodiered sewing patterns and sells them and other craftwares on etsy.
