After years of saying "This ain't your gramma's embroidery" I thought it was time to finally come out with, some of my grandmother's embroidery! My father's mother, Hazel Hart, was born in 1896 and lived next door to us from 1979 until the age of 99 and a half. I always loved this funny toaster cozy she embroidered and snapped a picture of it in my mom's kitchen on a recent visit. I'm sure it's a pattern, but I've always wondered if the droll words weren't my grandmother's own (anyone have this vintage design?). She and dad always did have a wonderfully goofy sense of humor.
I'm so glad you posted this. I can't stand it when people say, "not your grandma's...." My grandmother has been a great needlewoman for 70 years. What an insult to put down her for her age.

I love it! I'm a huge fan of kitschy vintage designs because I think the women stitching them were smart and sassy enough to see the humor in them. I especially love the punny ones, like this one. :)

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, positively, LOVE this! I've snatched, snagged, and recaptured every piece of my great-grandmother's embroidery that I can find, but she didn't stitch anything more kitschy than kittens in baskets. This pattern is awesome.
ReplyDeleteOh I'm lovin' this one! And especially "Have bread, will toast." I've never seen it, but have seen something similar to the hen and the chicks.
ReplyDeleteHubby's grandma was 102 when she passed and embroidered while in the nursing home till the day she died. It was her "work" and on Sunday she rested from it and wrote letters.

ReplyDeleteThis is so cool.. I've come to really appreciate things that my Grandparents and other family members have created.. but I'm not lucky enough to have an embroidered piece. This is a very cool memento to have.

ReplyDeleteMy cover simply says, "Hot toast makes the" and a big butterfly is embroidered under the words. It took a moment to get it, but then I had to get it for my kitchen. :)
